Supplication of Istikharah (Seeking Allah's Guidance)
Jabir bin Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with them both, said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, used to teach us the prayer of seeking guidance (istikharah) in all matters, just as he would teach us a surah from the Qur'an. He would say: "If any of you is concerned about a matter, let him pray two rak'ahs of voluntary prayer, then say: O Allah, I seek Your guidance through Your knowledge, and I seek ability through Your power, and I ask You from Your immense bounty. For You are able and I am not, and You know and I do not, and You are the Knower of the unseen. O Allah, if You know that this matter—and he names his need—is good for me in my religion, my livelihood, and the outcome of my affairs—or he said: in this life and the next—then decree it for me, make it easy for me, and then bless it for me. And if You know that this matter is bad for me in my religion, my livelihood, and the outcome of my affairs—or he said: in this life and the next—then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and decree for me the good wherever it may be, and make me content with it." And no one who sought guidance from the Creator, consulted the believing creatures, and was resolute in his affair ever regretted it. For Allah, the Exalted, has said: "And consult them in the matter. Then when you have decided, put your trust in Allah."
