Remembrance Before Sleeping

He joins his palms together, then blows into them, and recites in them: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Say: He is Allah, the One, Allah, the Self-Sufficient Master, He begets not, nor was He begotten, and there is none comparable to Him. In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak, from the evil of what He has created, and from the evil of darkness when it settles, and from the evil of the blowers in knots, and from the evil of an envier when he envies. In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, the King of mankind, the God of mankind, from the evil of the retreating whisperer, who whispers in the breasts of mankind, from among the jinn and mankind. Then he wipes with them whatever he can of his body, beginning with his head, his face, and the front of his body. (He does this three times.)

Allah! There is no god worthy of worship except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and they encompass nothing of His knowledge except what He wills. His Throne extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan.
The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and so have the believers. All of them have believed in Allah and His angels and His books and His messengers, saying: "We make no distinction between any of His messengers." And they say: "We hear and we obey. We seek Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the final destination." Allah does not charge a soul except with that within its capacity. It will have the consequence of what good it has gained, and it will bear the consequence of what evil it has earned. Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us, and forgive us, and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people.

Whoever recites these two verses at the end of Surat al-Baqarah on a night, they will be sufficient for him.

In Your name, my Lord, I lay down my side, and by Your leave I raise it. If You should take my soul, then have mercy upon it, and if You should send it back, then protect it in the manner You protect Your righteous servants.

O Allah, You have created my soul and You take it back. Its death and its life belong to You. If You give it life, then preserve it, and if You cause it to die, then forgive it. O Allah, I ask You for well-being.

O Allah, protect me from Your punishment on the Day You resurrect Your servants.

In Your name, O Allah, I die and I live.

Glory be to Allah (thirty-three times), and praise be to Allah (thirty-three times), and Allah is the Greatest (thirty-four times).

O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and Lord of the earth, and Lord of the Mighty Throne, our Lord and Lord of everything, Splitter of the grain and the date-stone, Revealer of the Torah, the Gospel, and the Criterion, I seek refuge in You from the evil of everything whose forelock You hold. O Allah, You are the First, so nothing is before You, and You are the Last, so nothing is after You, and You are the Manifest, so nothing is above You, and You are the Hidden, so nothing is beneath You. Settle our debt for us and enrich us against poverty.

All praise is due to Allah, Who has fed us and given us drink, and has sufficed us and given us shelter, for how many are there who have none to suffice them or shelter them.

O Allah, Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Lord and Sovereign of everything, I bear witness that there is no god worthy of worship except You. I seek refuge in You from the evil of myself, and from the evil of Satan and his associates, and from committing wrong against myself or bringing it upon any Muslim.

He recites Alif Lam Mim, Tanzil (Surat as-Sajdah), and Tabarak alladhi bi yadihil-mulk (Surat al-Mulk).

O Allah, I submit myself to You, I entrust my affair to You, I turn my face towards You, and I lean my back on You, in hope and in fear of You. There is no refuge and no escape from You except to You. I believe in Your Book which You have revealed, and in Your Prophet whom You have sent.
